Family Devotions

"If a casual observer were to visit our homes, what practice would he or she se that is distinctly 'Christian'?"

I truly believe that children need to see dad and mom leading in the study of God's Word, sincere in their prayer life, and faithfully pointing to eternity. I wonder and fear if the Christian home has lost its distinction and difference between them and the unchurched. We must ask the question, what traitions and habits are we passing to our children? The priority of watching the 6 o'clock news each night, or making time for family reading of God's Word and prayer?

In an attempt to help faciliate family devotions, we are providing our parents with a basic Bible reading plan. This plan is broken into 5 days out of 7 and 2-3 passages for each reading. Whether you call it family devotions, family night, or family worship, this is a time, maybe the best time, for children to learn how to worship firsthand. On another page we have some basic tips and ideas for getting started. However, know that it may look different in different families. The key is that this needs to be a priority in our lives.

"FIrst, let us begin by emphaticlly declaring it is parents (fathers in particular) and not the church who are given the primary responsibility for calling the next generation to hope in God. The church serves a supplementary role." -Charles Hadden Spurgeon (1834-1892)
